Obituary for Virginia Pearl Long

Virginia Pearl (Cooper) Long
July 17, 1930 - January 27, 2022

Virginia was born at home on a farm near Riesel, Texas. She attended Riesel Schools up to her junior year at which time the farm was sold and the family moved to Bellmead. She finished school at La Vega, graduating in 1948.

She later met a former Marine, Weldon Carl (Dub) Long, fell in love, and later married on April 3, 1953. Although she really wanted girls, each of the three births produced 3 boys: Ronald, Dale, and Keith, in that order. Through her Godly influence, and her stay-at-home status until Ronald turned 13, her and Dub’s consistency to God and going to church as an important part of their family’s life, their sons made commitments to follow Christ early in their lives and later in their own families’ lives -- Evidence of Virginia’s undeniable legacy of faith.

Virginia was a “busy bee” at home. If she wasn’t cleaning house, she was sewing or cooking. A house full of people never ran out of tea or food because of her attentive service. Her home smelled of Lysol when she cleaned. Even well into her 70’s, she climbed a ladder with a leaf blower to get on the roof to blow the leaves, acorns and small branches off and scare her family for her safety. She said it had to be done.

Her work outside of home was just as committed. When she acquired a teacher’s aide position at La Vega ISD, she liked it so much and they obviously liked her; she stayed for 25 years. That’s quite a work ethic!

She taught both children Sunday school classes for about 20 years and the Adult Women’s Willing Workers class for about 5 years before her health started failing.

Virginia became her husband’s caregiver for the last seven years of his life. She was a devoted wife. She was a devoted mother. She loved all of her family. Her family loved her!

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Preston and Rosa Estelle Cooper; her brothers, Joe Sam Cooper and Ferguson Cooper; her husband, W.C. (Dub) Long.

Family
She leaves 3 sons, Ronald (Suzanne) of Canton, Texas, Dale (Cindy) of McKinney, Texas; Keith (Audrey) of Waco, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Thelma Hudson; sister-in-law, Wanell Ryan; numerous nieces and nephews.

Special Thanks
The Long family would like to thank: the hospital staff of Baylor-Scott and White, especially Doctors Rogers, Davis, and Eubanks; the staff of Palliative Care and Hospice for their comfort, professionalism, and care during Virginia’s final days.

Also, gratitude to the wonderful staff of Brookdale Assisted Living, Lakeshore, for 3 years of attentive care; and lastly, to Peggy Kirkland who willingly served as Virginia’s caregiver while still in a home setting.
