Obituary for Santiago Chavez

Santiago Chavez, 93, passed away Thursday, June 13th at his home with family at his side. Visitation will be at OakCrest Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 19th from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM with the Rosary starting at 7:00 PM. The mass will be Thursday, June 20th at 10:00 AM at St Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

He was born on May 1st, 1926, in Waco TX. In 1931, Santiago and his family moved to Mexico City to pursue a better life from The Great Depression. He worked in carpentry and assisted in the building of Mexico City’s Music Hall. He married his wife Maria in December of 1949. Together they moved from Mexico to Chicago, where they lived for 10 years. In 1979, Santiago moved back home to Waco, where he would spend the rest of his life. Santiago spent his retirement traveling abroad throughout Italy, Spain and France. He enjoyed music, spending time with his family, going to church events and browsing through the Flea Market.

He is proceeded in death by his wife of 60 years, Maria, and his daughter Lupe.

He is survived by his 4 children and their spouses: George & Kathy, Margaret & Mike, Santiago Jr. & Magdalene, Jose & Luisa, his 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
